    First xx
You have really helped me. My mum wanted to give my dogs away because they were too naughty but I showed her your videos and we probably will keep them. ❤️

Good for you. It’s so empowering when you get your dogs under control. You are the reason Zak makes these videos. Well done !

Murugaprasad gkmp I am not an expert but I would say just to brush regularly or just to vacuum. If it is getting stuck to your couch, wet a rubber glove and the hair will stick to it when you wipe. But I find that my retriever doesn’t shed too much.

Whatever you do…..never shave your retriever. They are double coated so it insulates them from the heat and the cold. I live in a hot climate and my friend said to do so but it is really bad for your dogs so please never do that!

Could you do a video about how to prepare your dog/puppy to get spayed or neutered?

Spaying and neutering a puppy causes many negative health effects. Like they don’t gain proper bone density, or grow correctly. They are much more likely to get cushings disease and diabetes, thyroid issues, and pancreatitis . There’s even a higher risk of bone cancer.

Be a responsible owner and don’t spay/neuter until your dog is totally fully grown (2 years old minimum).
Don’t let your dog wander EVER and make sure they are well trained.

Hi Zak my dog will only do tricks for food…I want to make her do it anytime I want. How do I change that? I’m a big fan btw 😄

See my video, “how to teach your dog to listen without treats”. 🙂 Good question.

It’s easy to let this happen. The process is to ‘phase out’ the treats by asking more for less. Take ‘sit’ for example, ask your dog to sit, and treat as normal. Move so he gets up and ask for sit again, move so he gets up, ask for sit again, then treat. Do it again but treat for one rep. Then try for three reps and treat. Move your rewards to a more random frequency, by asking for more than one behavior, or reps of the same behavior.

Another thing you can do which tends to increase the enthusiasm of the dog is to only reward one behavior in a series in any single training session.
So for example, I decide I’m only going to reward for ‘down’. I ask the dog to down, reward when he does. I ask for ‘sit’ then ‘down’ and reward. I then ask for more and more behaviors and end each run with ‘down’ and reward.
If you do this right, the dog starts to race through the tricks in anticipation of the one that pays. He’ll do the tricks as fast as he can to get to the final pay off. It’s also good to use something your dog might be struggling with as the ‘trick that pays’.

Reinforcement schedules is a science in itself and makes for a great subject of discussion. Work with what works for you and your dog. I’ve only just starting phasing out rewards for recall after 14 months of rewarding every time. So don’t worry if it seems to be taking ages – sometimes that the best way.

Likewise. Food training doesn’t work. I never said POSITIVE TRAINING doesn’t work. I made my dog play and praise motivated. It’s easy. Hang in there. And use a proper collar ie a prong or pinch when training.

Mia Buchanan that first 6 weeks will be super important, so be sure to make sure your dog is comfortable and work on the basics like potty and crate training so you will be good to go at school, and your parents can easily handle him!

I am planning to get a new dog, I’m planning on getting a lab or a golden retriever. I don’t know if those are good breeds for beginners since I haven’t had a dog before. Can I please have some suggestions for a beginner dog owner?
