Teach your dog the trick to Sit Pretty

The technique ‘Sit Pretty’ is one of my favorite exercises to teach canines. It is not just a cute technique, however it has numerous advantages that make it a must to train. Teaching ‘Sit Pretty’ increases your pet dog’s balance and body awareness. It also builds your canines core muscles which safeguard the spine from injury during canine sports or playing fetch. ‘Sit Pretty’ is a technique for healthy pet dogs. If your pet dog has pre-existing injuries, seek advice from a physiotherapist to ask if this technique is safe for your particular dog.

Most pets do not have the muscles to be able to sit quite without support, and it can take 2 weeks to over a month to build the muscles. To do this you can practice short sessions of ‘Sit Pretty’ daily until your dog develops the balance and strength to hold the position.

Do you require some inspiration for you own training? We just recently released a 1 YEAR long training program called the Weekly Inspirations, where the Members get one tutorial every week that we recorded particularly for this program. That is 52 different tutorials covering cool tricks, body awareness associated techniques, proofing workouts and focus video games, to develop you and your pet’s relationship and training skills! These tutorials are not previously released on Youtube. Anyone can join at any time, the program is fit for newbies to innovative fitness instructors, and pets of all ages. Do you think a dog with the lower back leg missing could she do this to help build her up? Do you think she can do it without the last limb being there? Thanks for teaching us all these kinds of things.

Yes, although I would think it would be best for dogs who are healthy and the average weight. Sometimes young puppies are a little bit too floppy and under developed for something so straining, but a dog over 4 months old would probably be fine.

Is it okay to do this trick with “lowrider” dogs? (I have a Havanese mix who is nearly as long and low and a dachshund, though not quite.)

P.S. Emily–you are a woman after my own heart. I too, have rescue 4 dogs, and they are a somewhat similar assortment to yours: a border collie, and aussie, a terrier mix, and a Havanese/terrier mix. Thanks for all the excellent positive training info!

Thank u so much for this video. I find ur videos to be very helpful because you’re so thorough and clear in ur instructions. I wanted to take the sit pretty trick a bit further and teach my dog to hug. If u have time, can u post a video on how to teach a dog to hug? I would greatly appreciate it.
